Body Odor

Besides sweating more in puberty, your sweat also takes on a new smell, especially around your armpits, privates, and feet. You may not be the first one to notice it, but the people around you probably will! It’s called body odor (or BO), and it can be powerful in a not-so-good way. Some people say it smells like onions. Some people say it smells like a skunk. Either way, it’s just stinky.

Fun Fact: There are two types of sweat glands: apocrine and eccrine. Apocrine glands are found in your palms, feet, armpits, and groin. They produce sweat that is stinky, thick, and milky or yellow in color. They do not become active until puberty. Then, they start working all the time, but they are also triggered to work extra hard when you are nervous or stressed (stress stinks!).

Eccrine glands are everywhere (except your lips, ears, and nipples), and they produce clear, watery sweat that is triggered when you are hot to help cool you down!
